02. the time I tried to do a lockdown video.

This is now version 3. I have struggled. There is so much going on in the world that feels like it needs comment, but I don’t have the words to do it justice.

Version 1 - The story. Everyone has been doing videos in lockdown, I tried to do this one, and it didn’t work, one way or another. Technical difficulties. It’s a really raw version of a song called Out Of My Head that I wrote with the Ruby Beach guys, about mental health. Leaving that to your interpretation. Was planning to post it at a time when a lot of people on social media were talking about mental health and I thought it would be something for me to give people that I hoped might help in some way I guess, or at least would be better than posting a photo of my face and a copy-pasted comment, which was the idea. Due to the problems, it never happened. But I still got some audio. There are actually 2 recordings - the first is the rough initial recording I did so I’d remember what to do, then I tried to improve the quality of the recording, and in doing so I think I lost something - nothing I did could replicate the magic of the first one. I’m not even sure what the magic was/is, but there’s something. So see what you think - I’d be interested to hear your thoughts. They’re both at the bottom of the page, or here.

Version 2 - In light of everything going on, I felt my privilege hard. And me spending a massive blog post moaning about my first world posh white kid problems seemed inappropriate. Added a thing at the beginning, to acknowledge this rampant privilege and encourage you to honestly, read more important things.

Version 3. Realised an even better way of doing that is not to moan about my problems in the first place. There are way more important issues we need to be thinking about, learning about, talking about. So that’s it. Please use that time I just saved you to do just that. Which is what I’ll be doing with the time I am no longer spending trying to work out how to write this.

2 versions of the same song - a version of a song I wrote with the guys from Ruby Beach about Mental Health. The first version was my practice recording so I remembered what to do. The second I tried to up the recording quality, but in doing so I think I actually took away some of the "magic" of the first one. Would be interested to hear your thoughts.
